ZeitCoin Launches with $14 Million in Mining Support

When creating a coin you need to do a great job at 3 things:

1) Developing differentiated features into your coin (faster transaction speeds, more or less coins, etc).
2) Marketing your coin to the crypto currency trading community (people need to buy the coins!).
3) Marketing your coin to the miners. If nobody is mining your coin then no coins are being distributed to the public (this is how mining works).

ZeitCoin, launched on March 1st, 2014, has done a fantastic job at getting miners. They have done such a great job in fact that on day one over 20Ghs of scrypt based hashing power are already focused on mining ZeitCoin. This is a huge amount of mining activity on day one. To put it in perspective, one high performance graphics card can do 1Mh and 1,000 Mh are in a Gh. This means we can estimate that around 20,000 graphics cards are mining ZeitCoin on day one. At $719 per card on Tigerdirect, that’s over $14 million in hardware dedicated to ZeitCoin already.

ZeitCoin is not officially affiliated with The Zeitgeist Movement, yet. When I asked the founders of ZeitCoin about it they said:

[we] have gotten confirmations that The Zeitgeist Movement is very excited about promoting our coin throughout their 500,000 member base.

I spoke with the founders of ZeitCoin to get some more insight into the team and their vision.

Matt Schlicht: How did you come up with the idea of ZeitCoin?

The Zeitgeist movies originally which have been around forever and my colleagues and I always wanted to do something that could potentially be the right steps forward in having our traditional fiat system be less powerful than it is now. We all got into the crypto currency world at different times however we have been mining, trading and watching many different launches to try and prepare ourselves for ours.

Who are the creators of ZeitCoin?

We prefer to remain anonymous as we want to create a movement with like minded individuals. We don’t want credit or praise for this we are doing this simply to generate awareness about The Zeitgeist Movement and create a new community based around the philosophy that our traditional Fiat system doesn’t work. We want to educate not only the existing culture about what potential cryptocurrency has but to bring a whole new group of people into it. We did create the coin but we feel every person who joins in and are passionate about our coin are really the creators.

That may raise some eyebrows but we are comprised of a very experienced programmer, a digital marketer, a finance consultant and one very eager designer. Since the pre announcement we also have more and more people in the community that are willing to dedicate time and effort to helping through modding our irc channel, promoting awareness and providing insight from their experiences from their launches.

How many coins will ZeitCoin have?

There will be a total of 99 Billion

Where will the Zeitgeist Movement be promoting the coin to their 500,000 members? When will this happen?

We are in talks to have a booth set up for us at Zday March 15th 2014 in Toronto where we will be handing out 50 million ZEIT in total in denominations based on the number of registered atendees.

They have already started to send out information about the coin to their movement however we will be working in tandem with them to spread the word through their movement as well also we will be donating 100 Million coins to them to disperse to either causes or their members “this has not yet been discussed but will be shortly its just a matter of scheduling a time to meet”. However they are very excited and open to the idea we just haven’t had time to sit down with them yet and make everything formal.
